In the fall of 2008 WFW was commissioned to provide mechanical and electrical upgrades for the Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul, located in center city Philadelphia. The upgrades included the replacement of the aged HVAC systems serving the Basilica Chapel and the conversion of the facility’s electrical power distribution from two-phase to three-phase. Designs had to be developed to cause minimal disruption to the active Cathedral spaces. Additional modifications included new lighting within the chapel and a new directional temperature control system to automatically control the facilities various HVAC systems.
WFW prepared construction documents for the renovation of the 30,000 square foot Ryan Memorial Library building which includes reading areas, book stacks, conference and administration areas and a rare book room housing manuscripts of up to 500 years in age. All existing HVAC systems were replaced with close attention paid to maintaining tight temperature, humidity and noise levels, and good outside air quality while coordinating the visual presence of these systems with the existing architecture. Phasing of the installation was included to allow the library to function during the construction period. A dry pipe sprinkler system was extended to protect the library from fire while reducing the chance of accidental water discharges. A lighting design was developed for the general illumination of the stacks, reading areas and significant architectural ceiling features of the space. A lighting design was also developed for the display of a portion the Seminary’s art collection after it was decided to relocate these works to various parts of the library.
Wick Fisher White provided the necessary engineering project management for the design-build HVAC retrofit at Har Zion Temple in Penn Valley, PA. Included in WFW responsibilities were preparation of invitation to bid packages, descoping bidders and review of contractor’s bids, assisting the selected design-build contractor with requests for information, review of engineered drawings for constructability, performance of construction inspections as well as the provision of recommendations to the owner as needed.
WFW reviewed and compared two existing engineering reports prepared for the Church and was then commissioned to review the six buildings at the site in order to prepare a third report on the replacement and upgrade of the campus HVAC system. Our recommendations were based upon completion of a campus wide energy analysis, a survey and assessment of existing mechanical equipment and a carbon footprint analysis for four potential mechanical system replacement schemes.
